Giants win the NL West, last pitch



The San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 3-0 in Sunday’s regular season finale to claim the NL West title and hand the National League wildcard spot to the Atlanta Braves.

The second-place Padres topped the Giants in San Francisco in the first two games of their three-game series to stay alive but the home team prevailed in the last game behind the shutout pitching of Jonathan Sanchez (13-9) and five relievers. It's guaranteed: The Giants are champions of the National League West.

They tortured their fans past the breaking point -- all the way to the final out of the 162nd game. But in their last chance to clinch on the shores of McCovey Cove, their pitching held firm and so did their spirit in a 3-0 victory over the San Diego Padres Sunday afternoon.

Joanthan Sanchez made his prophecy come true, backing up his impulsive prediction from two months ago that the Giants would pass the Padres and wouldn't look back. He pitched masterfully into the sixth inning and also struck thunder with a triple that springboarded the Giants' two-run rally in the third.
