this Glee season 2, episode 3 video clip (“Grilled Cheesus”).This song isn’t for everyone, but you can’t deny Lea Michele’s talent on “Papa Can You Hear Me,” putting her in excellent company with Barbra Streisand, who sang it in Yentl. In the 1983 film Yentl, Barbra Streisand performs the Michel Legrand-composed song Papa, Can You Hear Me? The lyrics were done by the couple Alan and Marilyn Bergman.
The song has become a musical icon to a certain degree.
It has been performed, sometimes with revisions, or referenced on stage, in several movies and television shows.
In the stage comedy-musical Spamalot, the character of Sir Robin yells, “Papa, Can You Hear Me? during the song You Won’t Succeed on Broadway (If You Don’t Have Any Jews).
In the film Austin Powers in Goldmember, the villain Goldmember belts out: “Fahza, can you hear me?”
The long-running animated TV series The Simpsons features Nelson Muntz being overheard by Bart singing the song when he stays with the Simpsons family.
In the defunct TV live-action series Will & Grace, Jack sings Papa, Can You Hear Me? several times in one episode.
The latest TV show to feature the song is the hit TV comedy-musical, Glee. Rachel, played by Lea Michele, sings the song in the episode entitle Grilled Cheesus.
