Last year, Sandra Bullock scored the two biggest box-office hits of her career, "Alfonso Cuarón's 3-D space thriller "Gravity."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bullock is in negotiations to star opposite Robert Downey Jr. in the film that has already seen a bevy of beautiful A-list actresses come and go.
Originally set up as a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie, Brangelina's poutier-lipped half departed the flick when Warner Bros. reportedly balked at her $20 mil salary. This summer, the studio talked to Marion Cotillard, screen-tested Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively, then shifted their gaze back to Jolie. None of this yielded a leading lady, so WB started talks with Natalie Portman, who's garnering the strongest buzz of her career for the upcoming psychological thriller "Black Swan."
As you may have guessed, all that amounted to naught... which brings us to Bullock. Though Bullock hasn't signed on yet, the movie is looking like a strong contender for Sandra's first post-"Blind Side" role, and with good cause: It sounds awesome.
Bullock would play an astronaut and the lone survivor of a botched space mission who desperately tries to return to Earth to reunite with her daughter. Downey is set to play her husband, though it's unclear whether his character is chilling on Earth and pining for his wife's safe return... or simply bites the big one in space early on in the film.
Add to that Cuarón's talent for making visually stunning, exceptional thrillers (see "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and "Children of Men") and the commercially viable pairing of Downey and Bullock in a 3-D movie, and you've got yourself one heck of a flick.
Bullock is also in talks to star alongside Tom Hanks in "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," the adaptation of the Jonathan Safran Foer novel. While we're rooting for Sandy to tackle that project as well, hopefully "Gravity" will blast off first.
