UPS Plane Crash in Dubai: On fire before it came down



There’s been a plane crash in Dubai today involving a UPS 747 cargo plane which came down just after takeoff. Sadly the two crew aboard the plane are believed dead.

It appears from witness accounts that a large portion of the plane was on fire before the crash and the United Arab Emirates civil aviation authority now reports that the bodies of the 2 crew involved have been recovered, according to msn.com.
Kristen Petrella, a UPS spokeswoman said that the plane came down around 8:00 pm local time. The Flight 6 Boeing 747-400 was headed to Cologne in Germany but crashed only 10 miles southeast of Dubai’s international airport in an Emirati air base close to a highway intersection.
There was an account from an Associated Press photographer that the crash could not be seen from the highway as there were walls separating the site but smoke could be seen at the crash spot. The plane, which was confirmed to belong to UPS, crashed at approximately 8 m local time while it was heading to the UPS depot in Cologne, Germany. UPDATE: the plane was UPS flight 6 from OMDB/DXB Dubai to EDDN/CGN. The registration number is N571UP, a Boeing 747-44AF/SCD variant.
According to witnesses, the UPS plane crashed down near Academic City & Global Village on the Al-Ain Dubai Highway, 20 kilometers away from Dubai’s International Airport, 2 minutes after taking off.
UPS’ airline and international operations manager Bob Lekites said in a statement:
“This incident is very unfortunate and we will do everything we can to find the cause. Our thoughts go out to the crew members involved in the incident and their families.”
Al Arabiya spoke to an official and learnt that the plane was attempting to land on the airport when it suffered technical problems that led to the plane crash, contrary to main reports that say it was heading for Germany. Local media added that the plane caught fire while pilots were attempting to land it.
Residents in the area are reporting via social networking sites that they saw the plane very near and the crash was followed by a lot of fire and smoke.
Information on passengers and survivors is still scarce.
