Perhaps it's the fan advocate in me talking, but I think if a player hurls his helmet into the stands, whoever retrieves it should become the rightful owner of said helmet. The officials at Lucas Oil Stadium don't share that view and made a production out of forcing one fan to return the helmet that Brandon Jacobs cast into the stands in frustration early in the third quarter of the Giants-Colts Sunday night game.
While I sympathize with the fan to a degree, I can understand if a helmet, specially fit as they are to each particular player, is difficult to replace at a moment's notice. Nevertheless, it's safe to say that Jacobs is not taking his diminished role in the Giants running game particularly well. In the future, however, he's probably better off hurling his helmet at the bench like a reasonable malcontent.
