No Vincent Jackson trade, yet

ICON SM

Jackson had a deal in place with at least two teams but the Chargers basically refused to trade him.

Update: According to several sources and published reports, a trade did not take place before the 4 p.m. ET deadline. It's believed the Chargers' asking price is too high.

The 4 p.m. ET deadline for the San Diego Chargers to trade Vincent Jackson has passed.

While it's possible that a deal has been completed but not yet announced, it appears that Jackson will be suspended for six total games and won't be available to play until Week 7. And even then he probably won't play unless he is on a different team than the San Diego Chargers.

If the Chargers could have pulled the trigger on a deal by Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET then Jackson would have only had to sit out four games and could have played Week 5 for his new team, who most believed would be the Vikings. His agent has said that he was in negotiations with more than one team on a long term contract (the other rumored to be the Redskins) , which would have facilitated a trade but the Chargers wanted too much in return.

The NFL rules relating to these situations are murky at best (especially added to the equation an 'uncapped' year and impeding CBA labor unrest) so it's hard to figure out why Jackson landing in a new home would allow him to play, while staying in San Diego means he is out at least until Week 7.

It looks as though the Chargers flat out didn't want Jackson to be able to play on a new team until Week 7 even they do plan to trade him. They could lower their price now that the deadline has passed and trade him in the next few weeks.

If they weren't going to trade him, they never would have given other teams permission to talk to Jackson about a contract, but stranger things have happened.

Jackson was due to serve a six-game suspension because the Chargers placed him on the roster exempt list after he held out because of the contract dispute. The NFL Players Association negotiated to get the suspension reduced to three games, and Jackson already had three games coming because of violation on the league's policy on substance abuse. But in the end a trade would have meant he could have played Week 5.

ESPN and others have reported that the Chargers have been in discussions with the Minnesota Vikings even up until Wednesday afternoon.
