September 12, 2010, is the 32nd year that National Grandparents Day will be
celebrated in the United States as well as a few other countries. The holiday originated in 1978 and is observed on the first Sunday after Labor Day every year.
The founder of the holiday is considered to be Marian McQuade from Oak Hill, West Virginia. The goal of the holiday was for youth to recognize and honor the contributions that seniors have made to society throughout history.
There are other holidays around the world celebrated to recognize grandparents, that are observed on different days throughout the year, but the United States version is one of the very first.
If you know an older adults, or still are fortunate enough to have your grandparents, make sure you give them a call and wish them a Happy Grandparents Day.Happy Grandparents Day 2010! Traditionally we celebrate mostly mother’s and father’s day, but grandparents many times assume the role of parents and are important figures we love and respect in our lives. Grandparents Day started in 1970, promoted by Marian McQuade, and in 1978 President carter officially established the special date to be the first Sunday following Labor Day. The first official day was celebrated on September 9, 1979.
