Homeowner Killed During Downey Home Invasion Robbery


homeowner has been killed in an apparent gun battle with a home invasion robbery suspect in Downey.

The ordeal began shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday at a home in the 9300 block of Gainford Ave.

Officers arrived and found a man shot to death inside the home, Lt. Phil Rego of the Downey Police Department told KTLA.

Downey police have identified the victim as 53-year-old Hermilio Franco.

Another man, believed to be a suspect, was also wounded and taken into custody, Rego said, adding that he was being treated at a local hospital.

Neighbors were evacuated from their homes while police searched for a second possible suspect.

The 54-year-old homeowner was involved in a gun battle with a home invasion robbery suspect just before 3am in the 9300 block of Gainford Avenue according to KTLA News.

Franco was shot to death inside the home, and another man, believed to be the suspect was wounded in the gun battle and taken into custody. He is currently being treated in hospital.

There were reports of a possible second suspect and some neighbors had to be evacuated while police searched the area.

It was not immediately known if he [Franco] was already home when the shooting occurred or if he was followed home by the suspect.

Family members say Franco's wife and 28-year-old pregnant daughter were also inside the home when the shots rang out
