Indonesia Magnitude 7.1 Java Earthquake Strong Tsunami Warning Issued (Breaking News)




A strong earthquake in Indonesia shook the island of Java on Monday morning.The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7, was recorded at approximately 3 a.m. local time, according to the USGS.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a "localized" tsunami warning following the quake, but noted there was only "a very small possibility" of a tsunami.There were no immediate injuries or damage reported from the quake.




An Indonesia tsunami warning has been issued by Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency after an earthquake in the Indian Ocean near Java on the morning of April 4, 2011

The Indonesia earthquake registered 7.1 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre is believed to be close to 300 kilometres southwest of Cilacap in central Java.



The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre reported that "a destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist."The service added that there is a "small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometers from the earthquake epicenter."

Indonesia was one of the countries hardest hit by the massive 2004 tsunami that took hundreds of thousands of lives.

The earthquake, which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale shook the southern coast of Central Java at 3:06 hours (20:06 GMT Sunday). Its epicenter was located in the Indian Ocean, 293 kilometers southwest of Cilacap, the agency of meteorology, geophysics and climate of Indonesia, reported DPA.

The depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers, according to authorities.At the moment no information on damage or casualties after the quake, the latest in a series that rocked Indonesia in recent months.
