Indonesia Magnitude 7.1 Java Earthquake Strong Tsunami Warning Issued (Breaking News)

A strong earthquake in Indonesia shook the island of Java on Monday morning. The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7, was recorded at approximately 3 a.m. local time, according to the USGS.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a "localized" tsunami warning following the quake, but noted there was only "a very small possibility" of a tsunami. There were no immediate injuries or damage reported from the quake.

An Indonesia tsunami warning has been issued by Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency after an earthquake in the Indian Ocean near Java on the morning of April 4, 2011

The Indonesia earthquake registered 7.1 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre is believed to be close to 300 kilometres southwest of Cilacap in central Java.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre reported that "a destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist."The service added that there is a "small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometers from the earthquake epicenter."

Indonesia was one of the countries hardest hit by the massive 2004 tsunami that took hundreds of thousands of lives.

The earthquake, which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale shook the southern coast of Central Java at 3:06 hours (20:06 GMT Sunday). Its epicenter was located in the Indian Ocean, 293 kilometers southwest of Cilacap, the agency of meteorology, geophysics and climate of Indonesia, reported DPA.

The depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers, according to authorities. At the moment no information on damage or casualties after the quake, the latest in a series that rocked Indonesia in recent months.

Japan Earthquake Tsunami Aftermath Pictures March 14th 2011, Devastating Photos Of The Wreckage,Video

The interior of a destroyed temple is seen in the earthquake and tsunami ravaged town of Natori, Migagi Prefecture, Japan, 14 March 2011. Tens of thousands of people were feared dead after last week's earthquake and tsunami in north-eastern Japan as Prime Minister Naoto Kan said 15,000 people had been rescued so far.devastating day for Japan, after a magnitude-8.9 offshore earthquake violently rattled the nation's eastern coast before unleashing a deadly tsunami that swept away cars, homes and businesses as it touched land.

Devastating Tsunami Rips Through Japan After Massive Earthquake ...At 23-foot tsunami strikes the northern coast of Japan, washing away cars and damaging buildings, after a powerful, magnitude 8.9 earthquake strikes the country.

Firemen put out a blaze at Sendai Port after a devastating earthquake and tsunami that ravaged much of Japan's Pacific East coast on 11 March 2011, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, March 13 2011.

The Associated Press is reporting that up to 300 bodies have already been found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture (state) closest to the quake's epicenter, with another 88 were confirmed killed and at least 349 still missing.

Fear of a nuclear disaster rose when thousands of residents were evacuated from an area around the Fukushima plant after radiation levels rose in the reactor. The death toll was likely to continue climbing given the scale of the temblor.

Japan Nuclear Fail Plant Explosions|Preventing a Nuclear Disaster in Japan|Earthquake Death Toll Rises|Full Video

Japan - An explosion at a nuclear power station Saturday destroyed a building housing the reactor, but a radiation leak was decreasing despite fears of a meltdown from damage caused by a powerful earthquake and tsunami.

The explosion was preceded by puff of white smoke that gathered intensity until it became a huge cloud enveloping the entire facility, located in Fukushima, 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Iwaki. After the explosion, the walls of the building crumbled, leaving only a skeletal metal frame.

Tokyo Power Electric Co., the utility that runs the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, said four workers suffered fractures and bruises and were being treated at a hospital.

More than 215,000 people were living in 1,350 temporary shelters in five prefectures, or states, the national police agency said. Since the quake, more than 1 million households have not had water, mostly concentrated in northeast. Some 4 million buildings were without power.

About 24 percent of electricity in Japan is produced by 55 nuclear power units in 17 plants and some were in trouble after the quake.

“We have confirmed that the walls of this building were what exploded, and it was not the reactor’s container that exploded,” said Edano.

The trouble began at the plant’s Unit 1 after the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake and the tsunami it spawned knocked out power there, depriving it of its cooling system.

Smashed cars and small airplanes were jumbled up against buildings near the local airport, several miles (kilometers) from the shore. Felled trees and wooden debris lay everywhere as rescue workers coasted on boats through murky waters around flooded structures, nosing their way through a sea of debris.

According to official figures, 586 people are missing and 1,105 injured. In addition, police said between 200 and 300 bodies were found along the coast in Sendai, the biggest city in the area near the quake’s epicenter.

The transport ministry said all highways from Tokyo leading to quake-hit areas were closed, except for emergency vehicles. Mobile communications were spotty and calls to the devastated areas were going unanswered.

Strongly Earthquake (8.9Mgt) Hit By Japan and Tsunami 2011,Live Footage

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 hit off the coast of northeastern Japan on Wednesday, the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) said, but there were so far no reports of damage from the quake.

A tsunami advisory of up to 50 cm (about 20 inches) was issued for northeastern Japan after the quake hit around 11:45 a.m. (0245 GMT), JMA said.

"First I felt a jolt that pushed from underneath, then a big sideways tremor that lasted for about 20 seconds," Yoshiyuki Sato, an official at Kurihara City in Miyagi prefecture, about 300 km (186 miles) northeast of Tokyo, told Reuters.

8.9-magnitude earthquake shook Japan on Friday, unleashing a powerful tsunami that sent ships crashing into the shore and carried cars through the streets of coastal towns. The quake hit in the early afternoon, also strongly shaking buildings in greater Tokyo, the world's largest urban area with 30 million people.

The first quake struck about 382 kilometres (237 miles) northeast of Tokyo, the US Geological Survey said, revising the magnitude from an earlier 7.9.Japan, is located on the "Pacific Ring of Fire" and dotted with volcanoes, and Tokyo is situated in one of its most dangerous areas.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater and on average, an earthquake occurs every 5 minutes.

But Friday's quake, coming a few weeks after New Zealand's city of Christchurch was devastated by a strong earthquake, was petrifying."I was terrified and I'm still frightened," said Hidekatsu Hata, 36, manager of a Chinese noodle restaurant in Tokyo's Akasaka area. "I've never experienced such a big quake before."
"People were very frightened. Very rare since people in Japan are used to quakes.
