Wyclef Jean was shot last night in his Haiti homeland on the eve of the Presidential election he sought office for last year.According to the Daily Mail Jean suffered a gunshot wound to the hand shortly after 11 PM in the city of Delmas outside of capital Port-au-Prince and was sent to the hospital. He was later released.
The attack comes hours before Haitians are set to go to polls today to pick their president. Millions of Haitians still remain homeless on the streets just a year after their country was rocked by a massive earthquake.
A rep for the singer said the bullet just crazed his hand and he's doing well, saying, "He’s fine now. It happened late yesterday night and he was released after a couple hours.”He was treated at a local hospital and released.
We have spoken to Wyclef, he is ok," a representative said in a statement. "Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
Wyclef is in Haiti supporting Presidential candidate Michel Martelly, who is running against Mirlande Manigat, a law professor who is also the former first lady of Haiti.
Jean's brother, Samuel, confirmed the musician was shot. Neither he nor Mignon had additional details.
The shooting comes on the eve of presidential elections in Haiti. Jean is supporting fellow musician Michel Martelly.
