London, March 18 – Michael Gough, who was best known for playing Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred Pennyworth in the ‘Batman’ films, has passed away. He was 94.
According to his agent, the actor had not been well for the past year and died at home surrounded by family.Gough appeared in more than 150 films and TV shows during his 65-year career.
After ‘Batman’ he continued to work with director Tim Burton, starring in ‘Sleepy Hollow’ and also providing voices in ‘Corpse Bride’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’.Gough, whose career began in 1947 with 'Blanche Fury,' starred as Alfred in 'Batman,' 'Batman Returns,' 'Batman Forever' and 'Batman and Robin' between 1989 and 1997.
The actor, born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, rose to prominence early in his career with starring roles in the U.K. version of 'Doctor Who' and film versions of both 'Phantom of the Opera' and 'Dracula.'
Gough appeared in more than 150 movies and television shows, including British science-fiction show "Doctor Who."
Batman & Robin movie was finally given a sub-plot himself, where he was suffering from failing health and was contemplating his own mortality and forcing Clooney’s Bruce Wayne to come to terms with perhaps losing a second father figure.
The scenes shared between Clooney and Gough are easily the best parts of that particular movie and the only moments that work in that whole film where genuine emotion is expressed.
He died of old age at home in England on Thursday, surrounded by family, his ex-wife Anneke Wills said through her agent.Wills said in an obituary posted on the Doctor Who website: "As his body was deteriorating this week, he said that he wanted to hang on for St. Patrick's Day. And he did, just. In the end ... there is only love."
