REP. GABRIELLE GIFFORDS READY TO START FULL REHAB : NEWS

HOUSTON — Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Wednesday left intensive care for the first time since she was shot in the head in Arizona more than two weeks ago, the latest big step in the long road to recovery. With her progress moving at "lightning speed," doctors had the Arizona lawmaker moved to TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital, where she immediately began therapy that could last several months.Doctors said she will have a valve inserted into her breathing tube to help her talk.A breathing tube was placed in Giffords' neck after she was shot.

Aisiku said while she can breathe independently and swallow safely, the tube cannot be immediately removed because of the length of time it has been in place.Instead, doctors will lessen her dependence on it, a process that has already begun, until it can be safely removed.
Precise details on Giffords' recovery were scant out of respect for the family's wishes, doctors said, though Kim said Giffords was making progress at "lightning speed.

"Doctors did not say whether she is able to sit up or stand on her own.Doctors had previously reported that Giffords was having difficulty moving the right side of her body. On Wednesday, they described that as "weakness" and said her ability to move had improved.

Doctors said Giffords is doing her rehabilitation in her room and not in the hospital's large gym-like facilities where dozens of patients can undergo therapy simultaneously. She is interacting with the staff and her family and is awake "about as much as you or I are," Aisiku said.On Tuesday night, Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, were photographed in her room watching President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech.

The three-term Democratic lawmaker's ability to swallow safely could mean she won't need a tube feeding her much longer, said Dr. Imoigele Aisiku, director of neurocritical care at Memorial Hermann.

Giffords began physical, occupational and speech therapy just hours after she was transferred, under heavy guard, in an ambulance from the ICU of a Texas Medical Center hospital to the rehab center.

Latest News : Surveillance Video Shows Gunman Shooting Gabrielle Giffords

TUCSON, Ariz. — Surveillance video from an Arizona grocery store shows moments of mayhem and a judge's heroism as a gunman shoots Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in the face, then turns the gun on a crowd of people waiting to meet the congresswoman,an Arizona sheriff's official said Wednesday.

It also shows the gunman walking toward Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and firing his first bullet into her face from two to three feet away, the officials said; he then blasts 31 more shots in a span of no more than 15 seconds. Doctors initially said the bullet entered Giffords's head from the back, but they have since said it struck her above the left eye, and the footage leaves little doubt of that.

Pima County Sheriff's Chief Rick Kastigar said he watched the first part of the surveillance video, which shows 22-year-old Jared Loughner shooting Giffords in the forehead from about 2 feet away. It also shows U.S. District Judge John Roll trying to shield Giffords aide Ron Barber from gunfire.

Rick Krueger, the first person in line at the early Saturday opening of the Crossroads of the West gun show at the Pima County Fairgrounds here, blamed weaknesses in the mental-health system, not guns, for the shootings."This really is not about guns," he said, referring to the shooting. "It's about mental illness and a person who had an agenda."

Templeton said none of the 200-some exhibitors had canceled and the company expected about 6,000 people to attend the show. Items for sale included everything from "gun juice," a type of lubricant, to AK-47 40-round magazines for $19.99.

The tragic shooting of US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the slaying of five of her constituents at a Tuscon, Arizona political meeting illustrates one thing - that the Tea Party has generated a climate where extremist talk flourishes.

News : Sargent Shriver | First Peace Corps Leader Has Died At Age 95.

NEWS : BETHESDA, Md. — Sargent Shriver, a member of the Kennedy family and a former U.S. vice presidential nominee who served as the first Peace Corps director, died on Tuesday. He was 95.

In 1976 I became the Deputy Campaign Manager for Sargent Shriver's bid for U.S. President. Often traveling with Sarge throughout the campaign, I met numerous former volunteers and heard the stories of the early days, and the decisions that had to be made in the early 1960s about how service would work and who would be allowed to serve. The discussions of language immersion, cultural training, and living arrangements were a centerpiece.

President Barack Obama called Shriver, "one of the brightest lights of the greatest generation." "Over the course of his long and distinguished career, Sarge came to embody the idea of public service," Obama said in a statement.

Born in 1915 to a prominent old Maryland family, Shriver was the son of a stockbroker who would lose most of his money in the crash of 1929.
His family said in a statement that Shriver, known as Sarge, was surrounded by his five children and 19 grandchildren when he died in a Washington-area hospital.Sargent Shriver did several immense services this to country, including launching the U.S. Peace Corps after marrying into the Kennedy family as well as heading the Special Olympics.
We send out our condolences to the Shrivers and Kennedys for their loss. He was truly one of the great ones.
